 4. ERU AGBA BY GBEMISOYE AYANO

Approved by the Ministry of Education (Oyo)

Many people are intimidated by the mention of the word ‘portray’ because it is perceived as something cryptic and beyond understanding.

It is reflected in the voice of the time where subject matter and language choices may change with whatever is considered an everyday concern in the current expectations of society.

There are, however, pieces of information that can help us grasp and analyze poetry, and then find our own poetic devices.

The poem portrays the life of teenagers and youths as one that must be carefully lived. No matter how it is, they will become older; the time that is fragile and delicate.

The focus of the poet is to call the attention of the youths to what can occur during old age. The poet is afraid because he deeply thinks of things that happen to old people.

That is why the poet says, “Eru Agba n bani”. “Old age gives concern”.

The poet concludes that there is nothing teenagers and youths can do. The time is coming. The young shall grow and become old.
