English Registers and External Examinations

As said earlier, many external examination bodies set questions on registers. Registers as we know are specialized variations of words related to different professions and disciples. There are different registers in English. There are also called word associations. In this article, we shall discuss four-word associations (registers), namely words associated with photography, words associated with religion, words associated with entertainment and music, and words associated with family life. The students are asked to study the words and practice them consistently.

 Photography

 Study the following registered words very carefully:

Camera: It is a device for taking photographs or making films or television programs. It has a plate at one end and a lens at the opposite end. e.g. simple camera and pinhole camera

Fixed aperture: This is the light controlled by holes that read a lens in a fixed focused type.

aperture It is an object that allows light to reach a lens.

Exposure: It is the exact time during which light reaches the film.

Light meter: A light that monitors or measures and records the amount of electricity.

Negative picture: This occurs when the light area of the object appears as a dark area, and the dark area of the object appears as a light area.

Emulsion: Cream liquid in which particles of oil or fat are suspended.

Projecting: A picture to fall on a surface e.g. paper

Viewfinder: The part of a camera that you look through to see the areas that you are photographing.

Manual: Operated or controlled by hand rather than automatically or using electricity

Image: Likeness, copy of the shape of somebody or something

Lens: This is a piece of glass or glasslike substances with one or both sides carved.

Crystals: These are natural and transparent substances.

Religion

 Study the following registered words very carefully:

(a) Traditional Religion

 Deities: Gods or goddesses

Intermediaries: Moderator or go-between

Devotee: A person who admires and is very enthusiastic about something. It is a very religious person who belongs to a particular group.

Cults: A small group of people who have extreme religious beliefs and who are not parts of any established religion or a system of religious beliefs and practices

Divine: Connected with gods or God

Consult: This is to see somebody for any information or advice

Oracle: It is a place where people could ask the gods for advice or information about the future.  Oraclist is the owner of the oracle.

Amulet: It is a piece of jewelry that some people wear because they think it protects them from bad luck or illness.

Ritual: A series of actions that are always performed in the same way, especially as part of a religious ceremony.

Sacrifice: This is the act of offering things to god, such as an animal that has been killed in a special way.

Appease: To make somebody calmer or less angry by giving them what they want.

(b)  Christian Religion

 Sacrament: An important religious ceremony such as marriage, baptism, or Holy Communion.

Sacrilege: It is an act of treating a holy thing or a place without respect.

Confirmation: A ceremony at which a person becomes a full member of the Christian church.

Holy Communion: Communion connected with church members

The Holy Spirit: (in Christianity) God in the form of a spirit.

The Holy of Holies: The holiest part of a religious building

Catechist: A person having the beliefs of the Christian

Catechism: A set of questions and answers used for teaching people about the beliefs of the Christian religion

Pious/Devout Christian: A person believing strongly in a particular religion and obeying its laws and practices or having or showing deep respect for God and religion

Aisle: It is a passage between rows of seats in a church

The nuns: Any Member of a religious community of women who promise to serve God all their lives and often live together in the convent is a nun.

Pew: A long wooden seat in a church

(c) Islamic Religion

 Qur’an: The holy book of Muslims

Koranic school: The place where Qur’an is learned

Friday: This is the day that all Muslims (faithful) go to the mosque for the Jumat service.

Pilgrimage: It is a journey to a holy place for religious reason

Minaret: A tall tower, usually forming part of the mosque from where Muslims are called for prayers.

Muezzin: A man who calls Muslims to prayers, usually from the tower of a mosque

Ablution: The act of washing yourself

Sura: Chapter or section of the Koran

Sheik: A leader in a Muslim community or organization of the head of an Arab family, village, etc.

Qiblah: The direction of Kaaba (the holy building at Mecca) towards which Muslim turn when they are praying.

Entertainment and Music

 Study the following registered words very carefully:

Musical instrument: An objective for producing musical sounds. For example, a drum, etc.

Classical: Written in Western musical tradition, usually using an established form (e.g. symphony) and not played on electronic instruments. Classical music is generally considered to be serious and have lasting value.

Mellifluous: Having a pleasant and flowing sound; (of music or of somebody’s voice) sounding sweet and smooth; very pleasant to listen to.

Melody: A tune, especially the main tune in a piece of music written for several instruments or voices. It is the arrangement of musical notes in a tune.

Audience: The group of people who have gathered to watch or listen to something, especially a play, concert, etc.

Concert: A public performance of music

Megastar: A very famous singer, actor, or entertainer

Performance: The act of performing a play, a concert, or some other form of entertainment.

Performer: This is a person who performs for the audience in a show, concert, etc.

Musical notation: A system of musical signs, symbols used to represent information

Orchestra: A large group of people who play various musical instruments together

Drama: It is a representation of an action that can be acted or real as a play.

Cast: These are characters that take part in a play.

Act: This is a major division of a play and the scene is a subdivision of a play.

Costumes: These are adornments used to assume the character on a stage, e.g. clothes, shoes, etc.

Rehearsals: These are periods for practicing the mastery of the dialogues and conversations.

Dialogues: These are conversational exchanges of talks between two or more people on stage.

Playwright: A person who writes a play or a drama script or a play production is known as a playwright.

Stage director: A person who oversees the whole procedure of a play performance is called a stage director.

 Family Life

 Study the following registered words very carefully:

Domestic chores: The work done at home like washing, cooking, mopping, sweeping, cleaning, etc.

Matrimony: The state of being married

Housewife: A woman, who stays at home to cook, cleans, and takes care of the children while her husband goes out to work.

Housework: The work involved in taking care of a home or a family, e.g. cleaning, cooking, etc

Housemaid: A female servant in a large house who cleans the rooms, etc, and often lives there

Householder: A person who owns or rents the house that he/she lives in

Breadwinner: A person who supports his/her family with the money he/she earns

Bring up: To care for a child and teach him/her how to behave

Look after: Take care of …

Morals: Standards or principles of good behavior, especially in terms of sexual relationships, respect, honor, etc.

Cosmetic: A substance that a woman put on her face or body to make it more attractive

Evaluation

 Choose the words that are the most suitable to fill the numbered gaps in the passage below.

For the working woman, the task of looking after the house and __1__ the children is not easy. Although the house may have every modern __2__, there is still much __3__ to keep her __4__ cooking cleaning, mending, washing, and ironing. If she is lucky to have a __5__ help, her task is made somehow easier.
