Processes in Writing Describing an Object

In other to write a good descriptive essay about an object, there are certain steps to take. Let us examine them one after the other.

 Step one: Write a title.

Write the title of an object being described.

DESCRIPTION OF A RULER

or

Description of a Ruler

Step two: Write an introduction.

After the title, you should create an opening/introductory paragraph where you name the object being described and after the name, it is important to identify the places where the object is found and used. Learn from the paragraph below.

A ruler is an object commonly found as part of the stationery of school pupils and students. There are many types of rulers. But, the most common types are made of wood, plastic, or metal; it is a flat objects used in drawing straight lines or for measuring the length of lines of other objects.

The name of an object (ruler), where it can be found (from wood, plastic, or metal), and how it is used are described in the opening paragraph above.

Step three: Write the body of the description.

After an opening paragraph, some descriptive paragraphs will be developed. The descriptive paragraphs in the body must have more than one paragraph. The following characteristics should be considered:

  1. physical description;
  2. functions of an object; and
  3. the people using the products.

Learn from the paragraphs below.

A standard ruler (i.e. the type most found in schools) is usually marked for 12 inches or 30 centimeters, on the board side. The measurement in inches is divided into one-sixteenth of an inch. In the measurement in inch and another, there are sixteen equal spaced lines, each space indicates one-sixteenth of an inch.

The main function of a ruler is to measure the length of lines or objects. What this means is that we have a piece of paper and we are interested in knowing how long (or short) it is, we placed a ruler on it, so that if we placed the line marked at one end of the paper, we next look out to see the marked point where the other end of the paper will be.

Rulers are commonly used by pupils in schools. This is a major tool in the teaching and learning of subjects like Mathematics, and Physical Sciences like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Also, among adults, the ruler is used mainly by people whose work demands measurements or drawing of straight lines.

The physical features, functions, and the people using the products are described in the paragraphs above.
